Pressure and concentration effects on intermineral calcium isotope fractionation involving garnet

چکیده

To better understand the behaviors of calcium (Ca) isotopes during igneous and metamorphic processes that differentiate Earth other rocky planets, we investigated effects pressure Ca/Fe concentration on average CaO bond length reduced partition function ratio 44Ca/40Ca (103ln44/40Caβ) in garnet using first-principles calculations. Our calculations show (1) increases 103ln44/40Caβ decreasing (approximately 0.41‰ at 1000 K from a Ca/(Fe + Ca Mg) 1/24 to 12/12) with increasing concentrations. In contrast orthopyroxene forsterite, whose lengths are sensitive concentrations only narrow range, vary wide ranges. (2) The decreases Fe (by 0.12‰ K, FeO content 12.4 wt%). (3) by ~0.014 Å, 0.1‰–0.2‰ when 0 3 GPa. (4) However, effect 103ln44/40Caαgarnet–clinopyroxene is insignificant. Using our new results 103ln44/40Caαgarnet–clinopyroxene, evaluated observed difference isotope compositions between clinopyroxene natural samples. Most have reached equilibrium, whereas some samples exceed prediction, which might reflect majorite or kinetic fractionation.

Microscale reservoir effects on microbial sulfur isotope fractionation

Microbial sulfate reduction can impart strong sulfur isotope fractionation by preferentially using the lighter 32SO2! 4 over the heavier 34SO 4 . The magnitude of fractionation depends on a number of factors, including ambient concentrations of sulfate and electron donors. Sulfur isotope compositions in sedimentary rocks thus facilitate reconstruction of past environmental conditions, such as s...

Influences of calcium availability and tree species on Ca isotope fractionation in soil and vegetation

The calcium (Ca) isotope system is potentially of great use for understanding biogeochemical processes at multiple scales in forest ecosystems, yet remains largely unexplored for this purpose. In order to further our understanding of Ca behavior in forests, we examined two nearly adjacent hardwood-dominated catchments with differing soil Ca concentrations, developed from crystalline bedrock, to...

Calcium isotope fractionation between soft and mineralized tissues as a monitor of calcium use in vertebrates.

Calcium from bone and shell is isotopically lighter than calcium of soft tissue from the same organism and isotopically lighter than source (dietary) calcium. When measured as the (44)Ca/(40)Ca isotopic ratio, the total range of variation observed is 5.5 per thousand, and as much as 4 per thousand variation is found in a single organism. The observed intraorganismal calcium isotopic variations ...

Vapor pressure isotope fractionation effects in planetary atmospheres: application to deuterium

The impact of the vapor pressure difference between deuterated and nondeuterated condensing molecules in planetary atmospheres is quantitatively assessed. This difference results in a loss of deuterium in the vapor phase above the condensation level. In Titan, Uranus and Neptune, the effect on CH3D is too subtle to alter current D/H ratio determinations. In Mars, the effect can induce a large d...
